These hand carved blocks are made with Indian Rose Wood also known as Sheesham. This is an extremely hard wood, and is carved by artisans who are mostly illiterate, but can follow a pattern. Some sets of blocks are made in registered multiples, creating color effects perfectly registered on the silk. A difficult 12 inch square block with 3 registrations can take upto an year to make. All the wooden blocks are made in Tharparkar, Pakistan. There is only one region in Thar, where these blocks are carved.
